Center for the Design of Social Innovations

Why We Exist

Ukraine is undergoing the most sweeping transformation since gaining independence. Postwar reconstruction, European integration, demographic changes, humanitarian challenges, public administration reform, and community development all call for a new level of quality in public decision-making. In today’s world, the countries that succeed are those that build policies, programs, and services not on intuition or political expediency, but on data, research, and the real needs of people. It is for this very purpose that the Research.ua team created the Social Design Lab.

The Social Design Lab is an independent Ukrainian center for social research, the design of public policy solutions, and social innovation that helps government institutions, communities, international partners, and civil society make evidence-based decisions.

We combine analytics, applied research, behavioral science, service design, education, and project management to transform complex societal challenges into practical solutions. We address not only the consequences of problems but also their root causes. That is why, for us, research is not an end in itself but the beginning of a process of creating change.

Mission

We are creating a space for discussion on how to design social change in Ukraine in a more systematic, evidence-based, and people-centered way. We are strengthening Ukraine’s resilience and development through reliable research, humanitarian and educational programs, and innovative solutions.

Vision

We aim to become one of Ukraine’s leading think & do tanks, shaping public policy, supporting communities, and developing modern tools for data-driven decision-making.

Values

Transparency, Academic Integrity, People-Centricity, Innovation, Inclusion, Development Through Action.

What problem are we solving?

Today, there is often a gap between data, research, and practical solutions.
• Research does not always inform policy.
• Data remains untapped.
• Humanitarian programs sometimes lack a sufficient evidence base.
• Social innovations are difficult to scale.
• Solutions across different sectors are often not coordinated.

We help bridge this gap.

How We Do It

Our operating model combines 8 interconnected stages:
Data → Understanding → Systems Thinking →→ Shared Vision → Design →→ Pilot → Evaluation → Scaling

How We Evaluate the Results of Our Work

Grading system based on the answers to the questions:

Which solutions have improved this year thanks to our involvement? Not “what we did,” but what has actually changed in terms of the quality of decisions.
What kinds of people started thinking differently after working with us?These may include government officials, activists, community leaders, and grant managers.
Which methods did we test, and which ones did we honestly admit were ineffective?A lab should not only demonstrate success but also accumulate knowledge through experimentation.
What have we made available to others?Methodologies, tools, data, and educational materials. If knowledge remains within the organization, its societal impact is limited.
Which partnerships have grown stronger thanks to us? If, as a result of our work, people and organizations have begun to collaborate more effectively with one another, that, too, is a measurable outcome.
